SPECIAL TOURS by Michel Dancoisne-Martineau

Michel Dancoisne-Martineau volunteers for the local Charity ‘Saint Helena Napoleonic Heritage Ltd’, an expert in Napoleon’s exile, he leads various tours in French and English at a rate of £300 for the first hour, every hour hereafter or part thereof will incur an extra £100 with a £500 maximum for a full day. Please note these fees do not include the picnics, the transport or any entry fees required at Longwood House/The Tomb @ £10 per person and the Briars Pavilion @ £5 per person. These funds will in its entirety go to the Charity SHNH Ltd. 

 The following tours at the mentioned fees are offered for one person or to a maximum of 15 people :

1 – Napoleonic sites from the viewpoint of the curator in charge

  •              Longwood House (estimated duration of the tour = 1hour)
  •              The Tomb of Napoleon (Distance = 1.2 km / estimated duration of the tour = 1hour)
  •              The Briars pavilion (estimated duration of the tour = 1hour)

2 – Conditions under which Napoleon was kept and how it influenced the daily life of the French captive : the Longwood boundary-wall walk starting at Longwood House, Mulberry Gut and back via Longwood hanging (Distance = 6.5 km / estimated duration of the tour = 1 ½ to 2 hours)

3 – The myths, legends and anecdotes of Napoleon’s Longwood : starting at Hutt’s gate, the valley and back up to Longwood House (Distance = 6.5 km / estimated duration of the tour = 1 ½ to 2 hours)

4 – The social structure from the position of the Governor to conditions of the slave on the island on the time of Napoleon : starting at New Bridge and ending behind the Jamestown Market (Distance = 1.5 km / estimated duration of the tour = 1 hour)

5 – the administration of the island during the time of the exile : starting from the middle steps where napoleon stepped on to the island , the Castle, the Company’s Garden, Sister’s walk and ending at Munden’s (Distance = 1.5 km / estimated duration of the tour = 1 hour)

6 – In Napoleon’s footsteps on Saint Helena :  Using the services of a local service provider of your choice (we are used to employ Aarons Adventure Tours or/and Sub-Tropic Adventures), Michel Dancoisne-Martineau offers to be your guide on the whole island: of Jamestown, Alarm House, the Deadwood Plateau, Fisherman’s valley, the houses of General Bertrand and General Gourgaud as well as Las Cases towards Levelwood, some military batteries, Sandy Bay, Mount Pleasant, Mount Eternity, Rosemary, Farm Lodge, Saint-Paul Cemetery etc… (Estimated tour duration = 4 to 5 hours)  

7 – The mythical and legendary “Napoleon Trek” : Discover St Helena on foot in two, three or four days
– In five or six excursions of 15 to 25 kilometres each, focusing on hiking trails through forests, valleys and mountains, discover St Helena on foot in two, three or four days. Using Saint Helena and its Napoleonic history as a common thread, discover with Michel Dancoisne-Martineau other aspects of the island such as its colonial history, the richness and diversity of its landscapes, its endemic flora but also a vegetation witnessing a maritime past on the road to China, Sri Lanka, India, Southern Africa and Brazil. Filming and photography

The Briars

Rented all year round photo shoots can only take place on the outside of the house during opening hours.

Longwood house

Photo shoots available Monday to Friday : 8.00-10.30 / 13.30-15.30.

Due to the rooms narrowness only three people and one tripod are authorised.

Hire fees for professional medias :

  • £300 (Caretaker wage included) during normal working hours (i.e. 8am to 3:30 pm) + £50 for every extra hour outside the working time
  • £300 for the first hour + £50 for each additional hour on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays

For media reports demonstrating promotional interest, photo shoots are authorised in the presence of a certified officer (charged £25 per hour during normal working time and £50 outside of the working time and days). The staff is exempt from both the admission and the hire fee.

Napoleon’s Tomb

Only a free view from the observation platform is authorised during opening hours.

Prices for photo shoots in the tomb

  • £300 during opening hours (see above) + £50 for every extra hour

If photo shoots down on the grave site itself is required, please note some logistics arrangement must be preliminary made. Please inform at least the day earlier. A charge is required : £300 during normal working hours (i.e. 8am to 3:30 pm)  + £50 for every hour outside the opening time.
