On Thursday 28th September 1820, Napoleon, after spending several hours in his bathtub, went for a walk in his gardens in the mid-afternoon until nightfall with Countess Bertrand.
But before that, the countess had met Lady Lowe. Sir Hudson’s Military Secretary reports : “Lady Lowe visited General Count Bertrand’s wife, and the delight which she had with the whole of them on return. The encomiums on General Count Bertrand’s civility. Her anger with Captain Engelbert Lutyens [the orderly Officer based in Longwood] for inattention to her whilst there, but adding “he has never shown me any attention, he is never civil to me”. Yet it was only a few weeks before, “how good-natured, amiable, cheerful and good humoured etc.”
