On Thursday 21 September 1820, Napoleon, still as proud as ever of having been able to establish gardens on an arid and windy plateau, took advantage of the fact that his reservoirs were full to “feature the waters”.

On this subject, Louis Marchand recalls: “For a long time, Longwood was without any water other than that brought by barrels, dragged on a cart by Chinese. Great works had been undertaken by the Governor, to build a huge reservoir at the Pic de Diane [Ndr: still visible today]; once these works were completed, conduits brought the water not only to Longwood but also to the camp”.
